It was announced today that Jukka-Pekka will extend his contract as Chief Conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester for a further three years, to include the 2018/19 season.
The extension will mark nine years with the orchestra.

In 2015/16 they return together to the San Sebastián Festival with Brahms and Bruckner, to the Rheingau Festival to perform Lemminkäinen Legends, to the Beethovenfest Bonn, and to Salzburg for the third instalment of the orchestra’s residency at the Großes Festspielhaus. They start the season with a Brahms cycle in China and South Korea.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’ birth, the WSO has planned significant works from three different periods of the composer’s life: Lemminkäinen Legends and the 4th, 6th and 7th symphonies.

The WSO’s season theme of Nature in Music is not only reflected in Sibelius’ pieces, but in other major works on the programme such as Mahler’s 3rd Symphony, Nielsen’s 2nd Symphony and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé.

Jukka-Pekka and the WSO have made several acclaimed recordings on the Hänssler label, among others the Brahms symphonies, Schoenberg’s Pelleas and Melisande, Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 and most recently, Mahler Symphony No. 5.
