Saariaho/Brahms/Stravinsky – Auditorium Orchestre National de Lyon, France

“In fact, the approach taken by Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste did not lack intelligence. In reserving the fullness of his instrument for certain key passages (the Infernal Dance of all Kashchei Subjects, Allegresse Generale of the second tableau etc.) he created a dramatic coherence that linked with the ballet’s main theme, and gave much more weight to the high points of Stravinsky’s orchestration. The ending made complete sense. Just as in certain passages of the concerto (in particular the introduction to the second movement), these forty minutes of music offered the chance to really enjoy the qualities of the orchestra. There should be a special mention for the wind section and the horns. Everything was very solid.”
