Jukka-Pekka and the WDR Symphony Orchestra at the Dirigentenforum 2013

From the 25-29 November 2013 Jukka-Pekka Saraste and the WDR Symphony Orchestra will be participating in Germany’s prestigious Dirigentenforum 2013. Jukka-Pekka will lead masterclasses for a small group of young conductors, consisting of four candidates selected from a larger group over this period. He will watch them conduct the orchestra and will be commenting on and, together with the candidates, watching video recordings of their own work. The repertoire involved for these masterclasses is Beethoven Symphony no. 1 and Stravinsky Dumbarton Oaks.

Talking about the event, Jukka-Pekka says:

“I think these sorts of masterclasses are useful  –  and it goes both ways: it’s good for orchestras to get to know young conductors, and it may speed up the conductors’ careers a little.

It’s the first time I will participate in Dirigentenforum, but I have done many masterclasses in Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki. It’s interesting to see how the young conductors adapt to my suggestions, and how, if the suggestions work for them, they can also hear the results coming from the musicians.

It’s important that they really learn the pieces and also select the repertoire which suits their personalities, taking care not to make mistakes with this in the early part of their careers. In one word it’s the musical will and musical motivation I am looking for.”
